When Leo Chang set out to craft the latest version of the Hyperdunk, the Nike Basketball Footwear Design Director looked to evolve the line’s aesthetic while also solidifying its reputation as one of the most technically advanced shoes to ever hit the hardwood. Thus, Chang looked no further than a Nike design that epitomizes the future when visualizing the clean lines and streamlined aesthetic of the new Hyperdunk: the notorious Nike MAG. Incorporating the MAG’s extended collar height and minimalist upper, the Hyperdunk 2015 is a lightweight, responsive shoe that feels like a high-top, but performs like a tow top. The Hyperdunk 2015 combines a progressive design aesthetic inspired by the NIKE MAG, with technical obsession on the upper, midsole and outsole. Our goal was to make this the best-performing Hyperdunk from top to bottom.
As a result, flexibility and support define the shoe’s upper as Hyperfuse construction sees a seamless, one-piece upper paired with a flexible collar to lock the foot in place, an internal bootie of mesh and foam that conforms to the foot and Flywire for dynamic support that loosens and tightens with the natural motion of the foot. Joining the upper is cushioning in the form of Zoom Air units at both the heel and forefoot while a Phylon midsole provides additional comfort as foam surrounds the heel to act as a heel counter and enhance stability. Finally, the shoe sees the inclusion of dynamic outsole traction as a refined herringbone pattern as paired with and outsole design that wraps up the shoe’s sidewall to enhance stability and support the midfoot; weight has even been shed with a material reduction at the heel that also serves to reveal with Zoom Air cushioning inside.
The Nike Hyperdunk 2015 will debut with the release of the “Bright Crimson” colorway at nike.com and select Nike Basketball retailers July 1 while the white colorway will follow August 1.
